The barn owl is a stunning creature with its striking heart-shaped face and white breast and earth-toned feathers. It is amazing that a predator of such beauty can thrive in man-made environments-farmland and cityscapes, even downtown LA-where it feeds on rats and mice.
No wonder the barn owl was the overwhelming popular write-in candidate for the California Audubon bird of the year in 2010. This portrait celebrates the barn owl in the style of the old masters using the ancient earth-toned color palette of yellow ochre, burnt sienna, white, and black. This barn owl will be equally at home in your nest as in the wild.
“For the Birds” a site-specific installation project on the parkland of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, featuring works by artists inspired by local birds, bird habitat and migration, urban ecology and the works of James John Audubon. This event is co-sponsored by the Audubon Center at Debs Park and the Arroyo Arts Collective.
