Marionettes at Barnsdall Arts Sunday

m13El Nino has been a bust so far in LA, but, wouldn’t you know, the day schedule for making marionettes on Barnsdall Arts Sunday, it rained like the dickens. “For sure, this was going to be a washout: no one drives anywhere they don’t have to when it rains in Los Angeles” I thought to myself, as I schlepped up the steep cement steps with boxes and bags of yarn, toilet paper rolls, fabric, string, fat straws, cardboard, tissue paper, masking tape, hole punches and chenille vines (aka pipe cleaners for us older folk). Boy was I wrong! Before long, throngs of eager parents and kids crowded into Studio 1 at Barnsdall Art Park, umbrellas, rubber boots and all. This was a tough class…lots of materials to choose from and lots of moving parts, but these budding artists were dedicated. Kids and parents alike focused on the task at hand with good humor and a sense of fun. There was lots of sharing and few tears. Amidst the delightful chaos emerged some amazing creations and some really big smiles. I can’t wait until the next class, rain or no!
