Benin art flourished in the Kingdom of Benin or Edo Empire (1440–1897), a pre-colonial African state located in what is now known as the South-South region of Nigeria The Benin artists were master sculptors using bronze, brass and ivory to create venerated images of their Oba or god king and godmothers. In class, we will explore Benin ideals of beauty and create a portrait on cut cardboard using a limited color palette including metallic paint and shading techniques with visual texture.
